Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Additional information:

After percutaneous induction incrustation, partially open (caused by the intradermal induction) in addition to distinct erythema and edema could be observed in the test animals. The animals of control group 1 and 2 which were injected with olive oil DAB 9 (vehicle) exhibited incrustation, partially open (caused by the intradermal induction) in addition to distinct erythema and edema.

0/5 animals of the control group 1 showed skin findings after challenge with the test substance in olive oil and single olive oil, respectively. Skin findings after the 24 h reading were observed in 10/10 animals of the test group after challenge with the test substance (therefrom 4/10 with severe erythema) and in 6/10 animals after challenge with single olive oil (only slight erythema). After the 48 h reading, respective numbers were 10/10 (test substance) and 4/10 (olive oil).

Control group 2 that had been intended for a potential 2nd challenge was not needed, since a 2nd challenge was not necessary on the basis of the unambiguous results of the 1st challenge. Under these test conditions and following the results described above the test substance has a sensitizing effect on the skin of the guinea pig (BASF 1990).

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the conditions of the test, the test substance has to be classified as skin sensitizer (R 43 according to 67/548/EEC and Cat. 1 according to GHS requirements, respectively). In addition, the test substance is listed in Annex VI to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 and classified as skin sensitizer (Cat.1 according to GHS criteria).
