The surface tensiometer was calibrated by measuring the surface tension of water at 20.0°C. The mean surface tension value obtained for the water sample was 72.50 dynes/cm. The literature value reported by Dean (1973) was 72.75 dynes/cm at 20°C. This showed that the performance of the tensiometer was good with a correction factor of 1.003.

The mean surface tension of 90% saturated aqueous solution of the test substance, after correcting for the calibration factor and the Harkins-Jordan table was found to be 68.8 dynes/cm.

The time taken from sample preparation to the measurement of surface tension ranged from 21 to 52 minutes for the different replications. This difference did not result in any variation in the data.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The surface tension of the test substance was measured at 68.8 dynes/cm.
Executive summary:

This study was conducted to determine the surface tension of the test substance. Determination of surface tension was carried out using surface tensiometer based on the ring method as per OECD Guideline No. 115. The surface tensiometer was calibrated using water. The surface tension of 90% saturated aqueous solution of test item was found to be 68.8 dynes/cm at temperature ranging from 20.0 to 20.2°C.
