Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A dose response for benzoates was observed with mortality at the highest concentrations tested. There was no mortality at 100 mg/l and classification is not triggered by this assay. Although the testing was performed on sodium salts, this is considered a valid read-across for benzoates.

Research has also shown that the effect of lithium is reduced where there is physiologically sufficient sodium; effects of lithium to aquatic organism was seen in water with very low sodium (Key Study Li)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Effect concentration:
35 mg/L

Additional information

The LC50 for benzoate is measured at 484 mg/l

Lithium toxicity is measured at 2 mg/l

Lithuim makes up approximately 6% by weight of the benzoate, and the estimated LC50 for Lithium Benzoate on this basis is ca 35 mg/l
