Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The key values are based on two guideline studies performed under GLP. The studies examined the acute toxicity in Daphnia magna (invertebrate) and a freshwater algal species. Both studies included analytical support.

The 48h-EC50 for Daphnia magna exposed to Quaternium-26 was 0.24 mg/L based on average exposure concentrations (95% confidence interval between 0.21 and 0.26 mg/L).

Quaternium-26 reduced growth rate of the fresh water algae species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata significantly at initial concentrations at and above 0.033 mg/L. During the 72-hour test period, measured concentration decreased below detection and at the same time a recovery of algal growth was observed. This supported the conclusion that actual exposure related to initial concentration.

The EC50 for growth rate inhibition (72h-ERC50) determined based on initially measured exposure concentrations was 0.029 mg/L with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.028 to 0.030 mg/L.

The 72h-NOEC for both growth rate inhibition and yield inhibition was 0.018 mg/L based on biological relevance and initially measured exposure concentrations.

Additional information

As the 72 hr ErC50 for algae < 0.1 mg/l the classification is Category 1 for acute toxicity with an M-factor of 10.

As the substance is rapidly degradable and the NOEC for algae > 0,01 mg/l and <0.1 mg/L the classification is also Category 2 for chronic toxicity.
