Description of key information

Acute toxicity studies evaluating the toxicity of the substance to aquatic organisms are available for three different trophic levels.

Futhermore, chronic data are available for aquatic invertebrates and algae:

Short-term toxicity to fish:

The acute toxicity of the test substance to fish was predicted from a study conducted with the read-across substance Ethyl hexanoate (CAS no. 123 -66 -0) (see also the read-across justification). The recalculated value to correct differences in molecular weight between source and target substance was 4.77 mg/L.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates studies:

The acute toxicity of the test substance to aquatic invertebrates was predicted from a study conducted with the read-across substance Ethyl hexanoate (CAS no. 123 -66 -0) (see also the read-across justification). The recalculated value to correct differences in molecular weight between source and target substance was 25.5 mg/L.

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

The long-term toxicity of the Ethyl propionate on Daphnia magna was determined according to the provisional procedure "Extended toxicity test using Daphnia magna" (1984) proposed by the Federal Environmental Agency, Germany. The NOEC value for parental mortality as the most sensitive parameter obtained for the test substance was 1.3 mg/L (lowest effect value) after 21 days.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:

The toxicity of the test substance to the green freshwater algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined according to OECD guideline 201 and GLP. The ErC50 after 72 hours was > 130 mg/L. The ErC10 after 72 h was > 130 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The test substance is readily biodegradable based on the result of the biodegradation study. No inhibitory effects on microorganisms were observed up to a substance concentration of 5 mg/L. Based on these results the 5 mg/L was used as NOEC.
