- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Stock solution was prepared for test substance X0482.01 in deionized water at a concentration of 1,000 mg active/L. Each solution was added to duplicate test flasks at a concentration 20 mg active/L. % active: 99.7
Study design
- Oxygen conditions:
- aerobic
- Inoculum or test system:
- activated sludge, non-adapted
- Details on inoculum:
- Activated sludge was collected on 22 September 1993 from the DRWPCC (Downingtown Regional Water Pollution Control Center). The sludge was screened through a 2 mm sieve and a TSS level was determined. Based on this reading the sludge was added to two semi-continuous activated sludge (SCAS) units at a solids level of 2,500 mg/L. The sludge was diluted to this concentration with tap water and aerated overnight. A SPC was performed on this inoculum. The plates were incubated at test temperature. The result was 5.1 x 10E5 CFU/mL.

Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation
- Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation:
- CO2 evolution
- Details on study design:
- This test is designed to determine the rate and extent of the ultimate biodegradation of the test substances under aerobic conditions. the test apparatus consisted of 2 glass four-liter Erlenmeyer flasks containing two liters of modified biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) water. Two flasks receiving no test substance (control blank) were included in the test design. The flasks were placed on a rotary platform shaker and mixed at 110 +/- 10 rpm for the duration of the study. The CO2 produced in each flask reacted with 0.024 N Ba(OH)2 and precipitated as BaCO3. The amount of CO2 produced was determined by titrating the remaining Ba(OH)2 with 0.05 N standardized hydrochloric acid (HCl). The flasks dosed with X0482.01 were acidified on 21 December 1993 (day 89) and treated as above.

- readily biodegradable
- Conclusions:
- The cumulative percent (%) of the theorical CO2 (TCO2) produced for X0482.01 substance is 63.5 and 67.5 (89 days) respectively for the replicate 1 and 2. The %TCO2 for 28-day is > 60.
- Executive summary:
Objective:
The objective of this study was to determine the rate and extent of the ultimate biodegradation of the test substances.
Test Set-up:
Duplicate test flasks were required for each test substance (concentration of 20 mg active/L and for the control (blank). The final conbined volume of test medium, test substance, and inoculum in each flask was two liters. The activated sludge was initially collected on 22 September 1993 from the downingtown Regional Water Pollution Control Center (DRWPCC).
Conclusion:
The cumulative percent (%) of the theorical CO2 (TCO2) produced for X0482.01 substance is 63.5 and 67.5 (89 days) respectively for the replicate 1 and 2. The %TCO2 for 28-day is > 60.
Interpretation of results:
The test substance is readily biodegradable.
