Description of key information

Two reliable studies assessing short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) have been identified. Both followed the OECD 202 guideline and were GLP-compliant, but they differed in the mode of application of test substance to water. Following direct mixing an EC50 value of 0.26 mg/l for immobilisation was obtained, but after spray application onto the water surface a nominal concentration of 10.7 mg/l (measured 9.74 mg/l falling to 2.16 mg/l over 48h in Daphnia-free replicate vessels) caused physical entrapment but a maximumof 40% immobilisation. The EC50 obtained by direct mixing was taken as the key value for assessment.

Additional information

The 48h EC50 value obtained from one key study (based on geometric mean of measured concentrations) indicates significant acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, but evidence from the other key study suggests a physical mechanism of toxicity.
