Description of key information

The test substance, dilithium tetraborate is a white solid with a relative density of 2.349. The melting temperature of the test substance was determined to be >500 °C (594.5 K). Due to the high melting point of the test substance, the vapour pressure does not need to be determined.

The surface tension of dilithium tetraborate was determined to be 63.4 - 71.6 mN/m using the ring method in accordance with EU Method A5.

The particle size distribution was determined using laser diffraction.  The values obtained for d10, d50 and d90 were 65.624, 149.794 and 265.262 μm respectively (a mean of 5 runs).

The test substance does not meet the GHS criteria to be classified as explosive, oxidising or flammable. A safety study performed to the appropriate UN test also showed that the test substance does not have any pyrophoric or self heating properties and does not evolve flammable gases on contact with water.
