Description of key information
In vitro dermal and ocular irritation and corrosion studies have been conducted on one substance in the NDI category; Reaction product of 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate and cyclohexylamine (Warren 2017a and 2017b, and Henzell 2018, respectively). No classifiable responses were observed in either of the studies when applied to skin and no eye irritation was observed.
No data were identified relating to irritation of the respiratory tract. Given the results from the skin and eye irritation studies it is unlikely that NDI category members would cause significant respiratory irritation.

Additional information
PU NDI substances all contain the same core structure, with either cyclic groups or linear alkyl chains attached. PU NDI structures are therefore similar between all category members, and organisms will be exposed to very similar compounds. Organisms would be exposed to common structures, only differing by the functional groups attached to the core structure. In the body, there may be metabolism of the PU NDI structures, however due to the structural similarity of the parent compounds any metabolites are also likely to be similar.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The category members are not classified as irritant to skin as the in
vitro skin corrosion, skin irritation and eye irritation studies
conducted with one category member did not exhibit classifiable
responses.
