Results and discussion
Flammable solids
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- In the preliminary screening test following the EU and the UN method, the test substance was heated with the flame of a teclu burner. Melting to a brown liquid which became black at the end was observed. No sign of ignition within two minutes. The test substance 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-o-tolyl)phthalide should be considered as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations).
No observations were made which might cause doubts concerning the validity of the study outcome.
The study was performed according to EU Method A.10 without deviations and therefore considered to be of the highest quality (reliability Klimisch 1). - Executive summary:
The flammability of the test item was determined in a study according to EU Method A.10.
A small amount of the test substance was heated on a magnesia groove with a gas burner in order to derive safety precautions.
The test substance was loosely filled into a mould (250 mm long with a triangular cross-section of 10 mm inner height and 20 mm width). The mould was limited laterally by two metal plates. The mould was then dropped three times from a height of 2 cm onto a solid surface and then filled up again. The lateral limitations were removed and the excess substance was scraped off. The inert plate was placed on top of the mould, the apparatus was inverted and the mould removed.
Screening test: The pile was arranged at right angle to the draught in the fume cupboard and the wind-screen was erected. The flame of the teclu burner (minimum diameter 5mm) was used to ignite the pile at one end.
A stop watch was held ready. The test substance was heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes.
Since ignition did not occur within two minutes, the test substance was classified as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and non-flammable solid (for UN regulations), resp. No determination of burning rate was necessary.
Determination of Burning Rate has not been carried out based on the result from the screening test.
