- Details on test solutions:
- Test solutions were prepared by adding the test material to dilution water (dechlorinated and charcoal-filtered tap water) at a nominal loading rate of 100 mg/L, followed by ultrasonication for 30 minutes, stirring for 48 hours, then filtering (Millex HA 0.45um, Millipore Corporation) and transfering the filtrate to the test vessel. If dissolved oxygen was below 7.5 mg/l aeration was conducted to bring the dissolved oxygen concentration to above 7.5 mg/l. Test concentrations used in this study were 0 (control) and 100 mg/l. The test solution was renewed every 24 hours during the study. The appearance of the fresh and expired test media was checked at each renewal: there was no evidence of precipitation or of suspended or floating solids throughout the study.

- The 96-h LC50 of CuSO4(II)*5H2O was 0.51 mg/L (95% CL: 0.34-0.76 mg/L), compared to a 16-yr laboratory mean of 0.8+/-0.27 mg/L (n = 61).
- Reported statistics and error estimates:
- As this is a limit test the LC50 of dialuminium titanium pentaoxide was determined in relation to the single applied concentration rather than by statistical methods.

a Based on 10 fish per treatment.
b Achieved exposure was 0.360 mg-equiv/L and 0.468 mg-equiv/L, based on mean measured concentrations of dissolved titanium and dissolved aluminium, respectively.
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Conclusions:
- The 96hr LC50 of dialuminium titanium pentaoxide to O. latipes was determined to be >0.360 mg/L, the maximum soluble concentration achieved under the test conditions at a loading rate of 100 mg/L, based on the mean measured concentration of dissolved titanium. The 96hr LC50 was >0.468 mg/L based on the mean measured (background-corrected) concentration of dissolved aluminium.
- Executive summary:
The acute toxicity of dialuminium titanium pentaoxide to medaka (Oryzias latipes) was determined in a study carried out under semi-static conditions in accordance with OECD guideline 203 ''Fish, Acute Toxicity Test''. As the test substance is a poorly soluble inorganic compound, the test organisms were exposed to the test substance dissolved at the maximum saturation level, separated by filtration from a system loaded at a nominal rate of 100 mg/L. Concentrations of dissolved aluminium and titanium were determined by ICP-MS which were then used to calculate equivalent concentrations of the test substance. The test organisms were kept in 5 L aquaria and test solutions were renewed every 24 hours.
After 96 hours of exposure no mortality or abnormal effects were observed. The 96hr LC50 of dialuminium titanium pentaoxide was determined to be >0.468 mg/L based on aluminium analysis and >0.360 mg/L based on titanium analysis. All validity criteria were met and this study is considered reliable without restriction.
