Additional information

Data on the acute toxicity of vanadylhydrogenphosphate-hemihydrate (CAS no. 93280-40-1) to aquatic invertebrates are not available; therefore, a read-across approach to the structurally similar substance divanadyl pyrophosphate (CAS 65232-89-5; Catalyst E-326) was performed. The reliable guideline study followed OECD 202 with Catalyst E-326 as test item. The study was performed under GLP. The test species was Daphnia magna. The test system was static. Six test concentrations were prepared in a range between 0.3 and 10 mg/L test material (nominal). The test concentrations were analytically verified by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry for the vanadium content with and without filtration (0.2 µm) of the test solutions at test start and end. Achieved concentrations in filtered samples were lower than intended (between 6 - 58% of nominal). Measured levels in unfiltered samples ranged from 32 - 123% of nominal but showed a dose-related trend. After 48h, no test material was detected at the three lowest levels. At 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L measured concentration in filtered samples had been maintained or increased. Measured values for unfiltered samples at these levels showed a decrease..

At the highest concentration tested (i.e. 10 mg/L t.m., nominal) 50% of the daphnids were immobile. At this concentration approx. 20% of the substance was analytically determined after filtration (2 µm). Analyzing the concentration of unfiltered samples at 0 and 48 hours showed a difference (12.3 mg/L and 2.2 mg/L t.m., respectively) which was not shown in the filtered samples.

The 48-h EC50 was determined to be 2 mg/L (t.m., meas., filtered). Based on the vanadium concentration the 48-h EC50 is 0.658 mg/L (V, meas., filtered).

For the assessment of the toxicity of vanadylhydrogenphosphate-hemihydrate (CAS no. 93280-40-1), the effect value based on the vanadium concentration must be corrected for the molecular weight of vanadylhydrogenphosphate-hemihydrate (29.4% V). The corrected 96-h LC50 is 2.2 mg/L (= 0.658 mg V/L).

It can be concluded that the substance is acutely toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
