Results and discussion

Melting / freezing point
Key result
Melting / freezing pt.:
< -65 °C

Any other information on results incl. tables

pre-test result:

At 3.8°C: liquid;

At -19,8°C: appeared to be frozen when touching the surface with the wire,

At -80°C: solid

main test result:

in all three DSC measurements no exothermic event could be detected. No freezing/melting point can be detected under these circumstances until the detection limit of -65°C.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
No freezing/melting point could be determined by measurement with DSC until the detection limit of -65°C.
Executive summary:

The test was carried out according to OECD guideline 102 and EC method A.1. The determination of freezing/melting point of BTG Pyrolytic Lignin was determined via DSC (differential scanning calorimetry).

Referring to the pre-test the freezing/melting point should be between 5 °C and -20 °C (nominal temperatures) as the test item appeared to be solid at an evaluation temperature of -19.8 °C and was solid at -80 °C.

In all three DSC measurements no exothermic event during the cooling down phase until – 65°C and no endothermic event in the heating up phase could be detected.

Based on the properties of this UVCB substance the results of the pre-test indicate that the test item will increase in viscosity and will therefore have an appearance to be frozen. The DSC measurements confirms that there is no phase change untill the detection limit of -65°C

Therefore, no freezing/melting point can be determined under these circumstances.
