Description of key information

Due to its physical parameters, methylal is not expected to available to microorganisms in water. However, 2 experiments reported a low toxicity of methylal to Pseudomonas putida (EC10 and EC50 >10 g/L), Pseudomonas fluorescens (EC of 100-120 g/L), Bacillus cereus (EC of 40-50 g/L), Enterobacter cloacae (EC of 40-50 g/L), Saccharomyces cerevisae (EC of 40-50 g/L) and protozoa (EC of 20-30 g/L).

Additional information

An acute toxicity test performed on Pseudomonas putada showed a low bacterial toxicity of methylal (at 0.5, 2.0, 5.0, 8.0, 10.0 g/L) due to its high volatility according to DIN 38 412 Part 8 (Hansonis-Jouleh & Lamberty, 1992). The value of 1% inibition of cell propagation was observed at the highest methylal concentration (10g/L). Authors concluded that most of the testing substance is already in the vapour phase at 20± 1°C and thus no longer has any effect on the test organisms. Fievez & Culot (1998) reported that methylal presents a relatively low toxicity to bacteria (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus cereus and Enterobacter cloacae), yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) and protozoa with growth inhibition of 40-50 g/L, 100-120 g/L and 20-30 g/L, respectively.
