Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

An OECD DOC die-away screening test was performed. The test substance just failed to be readily biodegradable based on the test result but is considered to be readily biodegradable applying a weight of evidence approach, see below.

The test substance has an inhibitory effect on microorganisms and therefore a lag-time for biodegradation was observed.

An average of 68 % biodegradation was detected after 28 days and of 98 % after 35 days of incubation. On the basis of the present study the test substance was found just not to be readily or rapidly biodegradable by applying strictly the criteria "70 % in 28 days".

Applying a weight of evidence approach, the substance is nevertheless considered to be readily and rapidly biodegradable.

Justification 1: Applying the criterion "The substance is demonstrated to be ultimately degraded in a surface water simulation test with a half-life of <16 days", see the "Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria", or in other words: at least 50 % degradation after <16 d or at least 75 % degradation after <32 d have to be demonstrated. The ultimate degradation of the test substance after 31 days is 87 %, therefore achieving the CLP-criterion.

Justification 2: The OECD DOC Die-Away test was performed with the highest allowed concentration of 40 mg DOC/L. A repetition of the test with a lower test substance concentration would cause a lower inhibition of the microorganism activity and it can be assumed that a shorter lag-time before starting degradation would occur in the test and an earlier achieving of the criteria of 70 % degradation at or before 28 d (compared to now - at the maximum concentration - 68 % at 28 d and 77 % at 30 d, with starting of degradation only after 21 d).

The pick list above under Key Value does not allow for "rapidly biodegradable", therefore the closest entry "readily biodegradable" was chosen.
