Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Description of key information

According to the TNsG on data requirements a water simulation test is always required where a biocide is directly emitted to water.
Chloramine B trihydrate is not inteded for direct use in surface waters, but it is used in industrial, professional and private facilities. Hence a direct contamination of surface waters is unlikely.
Indirect contamination of the surface water environment is unlikely, too, for the following reasons.
Chloramine B trihydrate is not biodegradable (see DOC IIIA 7.1.1.2). However, during its application and its discharge in wastewaters, complete degradation occurs by fast dechlorination (see DOC III-A_7.3.3_1 and DOC III-A_7.3.3_2), The dechlorinated form of Chloramine B, benzenesulphonamide (BSA), is readily biodegradable (see DOC IVA / A29 and A30). Hence at the proposed use concentrations, chloramine B trihydrate degrades completely and does not enter the environment.
As the substance – via fast dechlorination to its metabolite BSA – is readily biodegradable, further investigations with respect to its fate in aquatic ecosystems are obsolete.
