Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The vapour pressures of diethyl carbonate were determined using the transpiration method: About 0.5 g of the sample was mixed with glass beads and placed in a thermostatted U-shaped tube. At constant temperature (±0.1 K), a nitrogen stream was passed through the U-tube and the transported amount of gaseous material was collected in a cooling trap. The flow rate of the nitrogen stream was measured using a soap bubble flow meter. The amount of condensed substance was determined by GC analysis using an external standard. The saturation vapour pressure p (sat/i) at each temperature Ti was calculated from the amount of the product collected within a definite period of time. The values of psat were calculated with the equation:

p (sat/i)=mi R Ta/V Mi; V=V( N2) + V i; (V (N2)>>V i)

with
R : 8.314472 J/K x mol
mi: mass of the transported compound
Mi: molar mass of the compound
Vi: volume contribution to the gaseous phase
V (N2): volume of the carrier gas and
Ta: temperature of the soap bubble meter

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Vapour pressures of 10.78 and 15.36 hPa were determined for diethyl carbonate at temperatures of 20 and 25°C, respectively.
Executive summary:

Vapour pressures of diethyl carbonate at various temperatures were determined using the transpiration method. At 20 and 25°C, vapour pressures of 10.78 and 15.36 hPa were determined, respectively. The applicability of the transpiration method was confirmed by comparison with literature data.
