Description of key information

For the algae Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) an EC50 of 3.64 mg/L as well as a 72 h NOEC of 0.065 mg/L was determined for growth rate (Mattock, 1997c).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
3.64 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.065 mg/L

Additional information

Comparison of test findings with published data suggest that the inhibitory effects observed are largely due to the toxicity of the metal ions.
