Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
The cleaning of the apparatus was performed with chromosulfuric acid and with highly purified water. This deviation didn't impact the results or the quality of the study
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
ring method
Key result
Surface tension:
59.1 mN/m
Temp.:
20.2 °C
Conc.:
316 mg/L

The solution was prepared 5 minutes before it was put the tensiometer vessel.

After 165 minutes, the surface tension of the test item solution in water at a temperature of 20°C stabilizes to 59.1 mN/m. Based on its surface tension, the test item is considered to possess surface active properties.

Conclusions:
A solution of the test substance (concentration is 316 mg/l, 90% of the saturated solution) shows a surface tension which is lower than that of pure water. The surface tension stabilizes at 59.1 mN/m, which is 13.7 mN/m lower than the surface tension of pure water.
Based on its surface tension, the test item is considered to possess surface active properties.
Executive summary:

The test item surface tension was determined with the ring method according to recognised guideline and under GLP.

A minor deviation which didn't impact the results or the quality of the study was observed.

Before measurement of test item surface tension, the apparatus was calibrated with highly water. The surface tension of test item solution in water, stabilizes at 59.1 mN/m, which is 13.7 mN/m lower than the surface tension of pure water. Based on its surface tension, the test item is considered to possess surface active properties.

Description of key information

The surface tension of the test item was determined in an experimental key study of Klimisch validity 1. A deviation which didn't impact the results or the quality of the study was observed

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
59.1
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
