Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Results collected:
- methylamine nitrate: EC50 48 hr = 231 mg/l (QSAR method)
- ammonium nitrate: EC50 48 hr = 111-840 mg/l
- sodium nitrate: EC50 48 hr = 3581 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Effect concentration:

Additional information

From the data collected, several things can be pointed out:

- first, the toxicity of methylamine nitrate seems to be moderate;

- then, the behaviour of ammonium nitrate in the aquatic compartment shows that the toxicity really depends on the pH and the dissociation in water, as the EC50 varies between 111 and 840 mg/l (same range as methylamine nitrate however); based on these observations, the same pattern can be attributed to methylammonium nitrate; moreover nitrate ions are expected to present no toxicity;

- the lack of toxicity presented by sodium nitrate confirms that nitrate ions are harmless to Daphnia magna.
