Description of key information

The toxicity of EAA to the unicellular freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined according to the principles of OECD 201 in 2009. The study was conducted under static conditions with an initial cell density of approximately  2 – 5 x 10 Exp.3 cells/mL. Based on a preliminary range finding test, a limit test with a nominal concentration level of 100 mg/L was carried out. Six replicates were tested for the limit concentration and control. Environmental conditions were determined to be within the acceptable limits. In this study Ethyl acetoacetate was found not to inhibit the freshwater green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus after 72 h at 100 mg/L. The EC50 for growth rate and biomass (yield) was determined to be > 100 mg/l. The NOEC was found to be 100 mg/L for growth rate and < 100 mg/l for biomass (yield).

Key value for chemical safety assessment
