Description of key information

EDTA can be biodegraded in soil under aerobic conditions. Based on structural similarity (for read-across justification see IUCLID section 13), this is also applicable for HEDTA-FeNa.

For the determination of biodegradation in soil, non-standard investigations under various conditions show that EDTA can be biodegraded in soil under aerobic conditions. The rate of EDTA degradation was determined in three natural soils after 20 days of exposure. 14% of a 2 mmol/kg EDTA treatment (equivalent to 584 mg/kg soil) was degraded in the three used soils under test conditions (Wen, 2009). Degradation in soil was also found in studies by Tiedje (1975, 1977).
