Studies on the acute toxicity of the substance are available for fish and algae. The acute toxicity data for aquatic invertebrates refer to results obtained for glyoxal a stuctural analogue of pyruvaldehyde.

The most sensitive organism in acute toxicity testing was Daphnia magna with an EC50 of 404 mg/l based on the nominal test substance concentration. In a test on Scenedesmus subspicatus an EC50 of 731.5 mg/l was the recorded. The LC50 determined in a study on Leuciscus idus was ca. 1000 mg/l.

The PNEC calculations are based on the results of the acute toxicity test performed with D. magna. The equilibrium partitioning method was used for calculating the PNECsediment freshwater/marine and the PNECsoil.

The PNEC STP was calculated using the EC10 of 6.7 mg/l determined in a growth inhibition test with the bacteria species Pseudomonas putida.
