Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The reference substance (BAGE) hydroylses rapidly to boric acid and glycerol and is not a PBT as it does not meet the persistence criteria. Limited testing is possible on BAGE and therefore the PBT assessment has been made on the hydrolysis products.

The PBT assessment has been made on boric acid, as this is considered the hydrolysis product of most concern due to its known reproductive toxicity.

Boric acid:

Boric acid is an inorganic substance and according to Annex XIII of REACH, criteria for the assessment of PBT and vPvB properties do not apply to inorganic substances. However, an assessment has still been performed.

Persistence:

No evaluation has been made as Boric acid is an inorganic and therefore hydrolysis or biodegradation data is not applicable.

Bioaccumulation:

Based on the screening criteria boric acid does not meet the criteria for bioaccumulation due to a log Pow of -1.09, which indicates very low potential for bioaccumulation.

Toxicity:

Boric acid meets the 'T' criteria as it is classified for reproductive toxicity.

Boric acid only meets the ‘T’ criteria and is therefore not a PBT substance.

Glycerol:

Glycerol is not classified for human health or the environment and is not a PBT substance.
