Description of key information

Particle size distribution studies conducted with Malvern laser and sedigraph. Fibrous mineral particles also determined in bronchalveolar lavage fluid and lung tissue of workers.

Additional information

This assessment relates to the main component, aluminium oxide, and the assessment of the reaction mass based upon its main component can be considered as a worst case approach. Generic issues relating to inorganic substances can be considered as appropriate for all other components within the reaction mass.

Particle size distributions ranged from 0.1 - 150 µm for coarse ground alumina, 0.15 - 250 µm for fine unground alumina, and 0.125 - 40 um for fine ground alumina. Respirable fraction fibres in bronchalveolar lavage fluid were 0.85 x 0.2 microns and thoracic fraction fibers wer 3.7 x 0.8 microns in lung tissue.
