Terahydrofuran-borane does not need to be clasified for the environment.

Tetrahydrofuran-borane is known to readily hydrolize liberating hydrogen, tetrahydrofuran (CAS 109-99-9) and boric acid (CAS 10043-35-3). The environmental classification for the parent substance is based on the worst case environmental classification of both hydrolysis products.

Tetrahydrofuran is qualified as readily biodegradable. For tetrahydrofuran short-term aquatic toxicity data are available for two trophic levels (fish and aquatic invertebrates) with acute effect concentrations of ≥ 2160 mg/L. In addition, long-term aquatic toxicity data are available for two trophic levels (fish and aquatic algae). Chronic effect concentrations are reported to be ≥216 mg/L. Based on this information, tetrahydrofuran needs not be classified for the environment according to regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP) or according to directive 67 /5748/EEC (DSD).

Boric acid is qualified as not readily biodegradable. For boric acid short-term and long-term aquatic toxicity data are available for three trophic levels. Acute effect concentrations were found to be ≥ 52.4 mg/L, chronic effect values were found to be ≥3.5 mg/L. Based on this information, boric acid needs not be classified for the environment according to regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP) or according to directive 67 /5748/EEC (DSD).
