Description of key information

2-nitropropane has been determined not to have explosive properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

We have evaluated the explosive properties of 2 -nitropropane according to the methodology described in the guidance document published by ECHA: first step was to examine the molecular structure of this substance and checked for the presence of groups associated with explosive properties. This yields the presence of the Nitro group. If such a group is present, we cannot waive the testing of explosive properties and the Oxygen balance (OB) is calculated. For 2 -nitropropane, the OB is -135. If the OB is less than -200, testing for explosive properties cannot be waived. Another possibility for waiving testing can be found if the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is above 500 °C. An expert in reactive chemistry within our company gave us the advice to perform the explosivity testing since he doubted that this possibility for waiving could bring a conclusion. Therefore, we asked HARLAN Laboratories to perform the explosiveness tests on this compound.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The explosivity tests were negative, so the substance is considered to be non explosive.
