The test article was formed into a train about 250 mm long. A hot flame of a propane/butane gas burner was applied to one extremity of the train for a maximum of 2 minutes.
It was observed whether the test article ignites and the flame propagates, and the burning rate was measured when appropriate.
This preliminary screen test was performed three times.
Observations:
- Ignition of the test article with propagation was observed during the preliminary tests, but it took more than the 4 minute test period, to burn over 200 mm: during both trials, 100 mm burnt in 4 minutes and 23 seconds (1st trial, and 200 mm burnt in 8 minutes and 22 seconds (2nd trial). Therefore, no further testing was required.
- An emisiion of black smoke was observed. Formation of a "crust" at the surface of the pile with extrusion of the test article was noted at the point of contact with the flame.
HAT ISO was not considered to be highly flammable.

Step 1: A small quantity of the test article (about 3 mm in diameter) was placed in a glass dish (diameter 70 mm) containing distilled water.
Step 2: A small quantity of the test article (about 3 mm in diameter) was placed onto the center of a filter paper floating on the surface of distilled water.
Step 3: The test article was made into a pile about 1.5 cm high and 3 cm in diameter with an indentation in the top. Drops of water (100 µL) were added to the hollow.
Step 4: 20 mL of water were poured onto 10.15 g of the test article as supplied. This step was performed only once.

Flammable solids
A preliminary test according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.10 was performed to determine the flammability of the test substance. The test item was formed into a powder train. The flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train for 2 minutes. The burning of the pile was observed. The test was performed twice. In the preliminary test the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary test, no main test was performed. The test item is considered as a not readily combustible solid of Division 4.1. and is not a flammable solid.
Flammable gases
The test item is a solid at ambient conditions. This hazard class is only applicable for gases. Thus, the substance was not considered for classification as flammable gas.
Flammable liquid
The test item is a solid at ambient conditions. This hazard class is only applicable for liquids. Thus, the substance was not considered for classification as flammable liquid.
Pyrophoric solids
A study was conducted according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.13 to determine the pyrophoric properties of the test item. 1 mL of test item was poured from about 1 m height onto a non-combustible surface (porcelain cup containing diatomeaceous earth). Observations were performed for ignition of the test article during dropping and within 5 minutes after settling. The test was repeated 6 times. The test item did not present any pyrophoric properties.
Pyrophoric liquids
The test item is a solid at ambient conditions. This hazard class is only applicable for liquids. Thus, the substance was not considered for classification as pyrophoric liquid.
Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
A study was conducted according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.12 to determine the flammability of the test item in contact with water. The test item was tested through the step by step sequence described in the guideline. At each step, observations were performed for evolution or ignition of gas. Contact with water did not lead to evolution of gas which may be highly flammable.
Self-heating substances/mixture
In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the UN test N 4 for self-heating substances and mixtures do not need to be conducted as the onset temperature is greater than 220 °C in the Grewer Oven test (screening test). In the self-ignition study an onset temperature of 256 °C was determined.
Flammable Aerosols
Section 2.4.2 of Guidance on the application on the CLP Criteria states as follows: “Aerosols, this means aerosol dispensers, are any non-refillable receptacles made of metal, glass or plastics and containing a gas compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure, with or without a liquid, paste or powder, and fitted with a release device allowing the contents to be ejected as solid or liquid particles in suspension in a gas, as a foam, paste or powder or in a liquid state or in a gaseous state." Thus, as the substance does not meet the definition for aerosol because it is a solid substance, the test for aerosols was waived. Consequently the substance has not to be considered for classification for this hazard class.
In conclusion the test substance has not to be considered as flammable gas, flammable liquid, flammable solid, flammable in contact with water, flammable aerosol, pyrophoric solid, pyrophoric liquid or self-heating substance.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008
In accordance with Annex I section 2.2, section 2.3, section 2.6, section 2.7, section 2.9, section 2.10, section 2.11 and section 2.12 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as amended for the twelfth time in Regulation (EU) 2019/521, and UN GHS Rev 7 (2017) the test item has not to be classified as flammable liquid, readily combustible solid in class 4, Division 4.1, self-heating substance in Class 4, Division 4.2, substance which in contact with water emits flammable gases in Class 4, Division 4.3, pyrophoric liquid, pyrophoric solid in class 4, Division 4.2, flammable gas in class 2 or as aerosol in class 2.
