Thermal Stability:

The DSC-measurement in a closed glass crucible (measured at 1015 hPa) with the test item showed one endothermic effect in the temperature range 45 °C to 95 °C.

Melting Point / Melting Range (DSC):

The measurements in aluminium crucibles (measured at 1002 hPa and 1015 hPa respectively) with a hole showed an endothermic effect (melting) in the temperature range 40 – 100 °C with an onset temperature of 78 °C to 82 °C. The onset temperature is derived from the intersection of the tangent line with the highest slope of the endothermic peak with the baseline. The test item has a melting range of 78 °C to 82 °C.

Conclusions:
The test item, Stearic acid, cobalt salt, had a melting range of 78 °C to 82 °C under atmospheric pressure.

Any other information on results incl. tables

The measurement in an aluminium crucible (measured at 1015 hPa) with a hole showed an endothermic effect after the melting in the temperature range 330 – 490 °C with an onset temperature of 340 °C. A second measurement also showed an endothermic effect starting at 330 °C. However due to the uneven course of the base line a further interpretation of this measurement was not possible.

An additional measurement with the capillary method was performed in order to clarify the results of the DSC measurements.

Due to the result of the capillary measurement it can be concluded that the test item starts to boil under decomposition around 340 °C (based on the DSC method). Under the assumption of a boiling point of 340 °C, a correction of Δt of the boiling point to standard atmospheric pressure 1013.3 hPa was performed. The test item had a mean boiling point at atmospheric pressure (1013.3 hPa) of 340.0 °C.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

The test item, stearic acid cobalt salt, starts to boil under decomposition around 340 °C corrected at a pressure of 1013.3 mbar.
