Description of key information

Several studies with multiple EDTA compounds have been performed on several species of fish, incl rainbow trout, zebrafish, bluegill sunfish, guppy and fathead minnow. The reliable endpoint from the study by Dow (/Batchelder) using the actual testsubstance (EDTA-CuNa2) with the bluegill sunfish was chosen as key.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Dose descriptor:
LC50
Effect concentration:
555 mg/L

Additional information

Several studies with multiple EDTA salts or complexes covering multiple fish species indicate EDTA and/or related salts are not highly toxic to fish under common environmental conditions. Exposure to fish in soft waters could enhance toxicity, however, all data indicate LC50 values > 40 mg/L.
