Description of key information
No terrestrial test data are available for EDTA-CuNa2. For EDTA-CuK2 however, an acute toxicity test with earthworms according to OECD TG 207 and a terrestrial plant test according to OECD TG 208 is available. These results obtained for EDTA-CuK2 are read across to EDTA-CuNa2 (see IUCLID chapter 13 for justification).
The EC50 for earthworm corrected for molecular weight difference and active ingredient is 641 mg EDTA-CuNa2/kg dw
The EC50 of the most sensitive plant corrected for molecular weight difference and active ingredient is 191.3 mg EDTA-CuNa2/kg dw.
The hazard assessment of EDTA-CuNa2 reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance. The substance is expected to have a low potential for adsorption based on its ionic structure under environmental relevant pH conditions and its low log Kow , the low log Kow also indicates that the substance will not be bioaccumulative. There are no further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the environment.

The earthworm test with the potassium salt resulted in a NOEC for body weight loss of 316 mg/kg soil dry weight and LOEC was determined to be 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight. The EC50 for weight was determined to be 754 (394 - 1401) mg/kg dw. The LC50 for mortality is 1018 (756 - 1703) mg/kg dw.
These results need to be corrected for active ingredient and difference in molecular weight. Molecular weight correction is considered justified as neither sodium nor potassium are considered to have an influence on the toxicity of the EDTA-Cu complex under environmental conditions.
The active ingredient content of the EDTA-CuK2 batch was 92%.
For the earthworm test the NOEC and LOEC based on active ingredient are then 291 and 920 mg EDTA-CuK2 /kg dw. Corrected for the MW difference between EDTA-CuK2 and EDTA-CuNa2 this results in a NOEC (291 *397.3/430) = 268.6 and LOEC of 850 mg a.i./kg dw.
The EC50 for weight corrected for active ingredient and recalculated to EDTA-CuNa2 (754 * 0.92 *397.3/430) is 641 mg/kg dw
The plant test performed with three different plant species gave a lowest NOEC of 160 mg test item/kg dw for the growth, shoot height and shoot wet weight of Brassica napus (rape). The lowest EC50 of 225 mg test item/kg dw was observed for the number of emerged seedlings for Glycine max (soybean). The test item contained 92% active ingredient. The effect data based on active are then: NOEC of 147.2 mg a.i./kg dw was observed for the growth, shoot height and shoot wet weight of Brassica napus (rape). The lowest EC50 of 207 mg a.i./kg dw.
This result is recalculated to EDTA-CuNa2 complex (see chapter 13 for justification) using the ratio of the MW's (of 397.3/430) resulting in an EC50 of 191.3 mg EDTA-CuNa2/kg dw.
