Description of key information
The Brennzahl of Allantoin is 2.
No flammability on contact with water.
No pyrophoricity.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
The combustion behaviour of Allantoin was tested in an experimental study in 2002, using the Brennzahl process.
For this purpose, the substance was consecutively exposed to several types of ignition sources. As the substance melted but did not burn after exposure, its Brennzahl (= combustion behaviour) was characterized as being 2 (Brennzahl 2-short burning and rapid extinction) on a scale of 6 (6 being explosion-like burning).
Considering the structural formula and experience in handling and use it can be stated that pyrophoricity or flammability on contact with water are not a concern for the abovementioned substance. Therefore, testing for pyrophoricity or flammability on contact with water are scientifically unjustified.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the available flammability data, allantoin is not classified as flammable according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation 1272/2008.
According to REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2,2 mm/s. In the test performed, the test substance melted but did not burn by itself. Only a small inflammation of the test substance was observed which stopped immediately after removal of the ignition source. Therefore the combustion behaviour of Allantoin is characterized as 2 (Brennzahl 2-short burning and rapid extinction) on a scale of 6 (6 being explosion-like burning).
A pyrophoric solid shall be classified in a single category for this class using test N.2 in Part III, subsection 33.3.1.4 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria if the solid ignites within 5 minutes of coming into contact with air.
A substance or mixture which, in contact with water, emits flammable gases shall be classified in one of the three categories for this class, using test N.5 in Part III, sub-section 33.4.1.4 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria.
Considering the structural formula and experience in handling and use it can be stated that pyrophoricity or flammability on contact with water are not a concern for the abovementioned substance.
Therefore, neither classification as flammable solid, nor as pyrophoric solid or substance which, in contact with water, emits flammable gases, are warranted.
Information on Registered Substances comes from registration dossiers which have been assigned a registration number.
