Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

The ErC50 from an OECD 201 test is above the maximum solubility of 14 mg/l. The EbC50 is 13.7 mg/l. the corresponding EC10 values are 8.52 (ErC10) and 0.49 mg/l (EbC10).

The aquatic toxicity was also estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.10 included in the EpiSuite models of US-EPA. The estimated 96-hr E50 value for algae is 31,3 mg/l. Since this value is higher than the maximum measured water solubility of 14.7 mg/l, the substance may not be bioavailable enough to exert acute toxicity.

The estimated chronic toxicity is expressed as the chronic value (ChV). The ChV, is defined as the geometric mean of the no observed effect concentration (NOEC) and the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC). To derive a NOEC, the ChV can be divided by √2. (REACH Guidance R10, Table R10-1). The estimated chronic value for algae is 8.6 mg/l, the corresponding NOEC is 6.0 mg/l which is close to the measured ErC10 of 8.52 mg/l.

The acute and chronic aquatic toxicity of diphenyl sulphone for freshwater fish and Daphnid were estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.10. The substance is regarded as a neutral organic, which indicates a baseline toxicity (narcosis), without excess toxicity for a specific species due to the activity of a chemical functional group. The estimated 96-hr LC50 values for fish and Daphnid are 51 mg/l and 30,6 mg/l respectively; these acute toxicity values are above the measured water solubility of 14.7 mg/l. The substance may not be bioavailable enough to exert acute toxicity.

Also the chronic aquatic toxicity was estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.10.

The ChV values for fish and Daphnid are estimated to be 5.3 mg/l and 3.5 mg/l; the corresponding NOEC values are 3.8 mg/l and 2.5 mg/l.

The ChV values for fish, Daphnid and algae are below the measured water solubility of 14.7 mg/l. The NOEC values are above the classification threshold of 1 mg/l, so diphneyl sulphone is not classified for the aquatic environment according to the CLP criteria.

The EC50 (3h) of Diphenyl sulphone (EC 204-853-1) was determined as 179.9 mg/l (nominal) in an active sludge respiration inhibition test (OECD test guideline 209).
