Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a study according to OECD 201 (reliability category 1) with Scenedesmus subspicatus an EC50 (growth reduction) after 72 hours of 4.3 mg/L 3,3´-dichlorobenzidine was determined.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
4.3 mg/L

Additional information

For the determination of the toxicity of the submission substance3,3´-dichlorobenzidine dihydrochloride its corresponding base, 3,3´-dichlorobenzidine, being of equivalent toxicological concern, had been tested in short-term toxicity studies in fish, aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna), aquatic plants (algae, Scenedesmus subspicatus) and microorganisms.

The key study for aquatic plants (reliability category 1) had been performed on the unicellular alga Scenedesmus subspicatus. In a growth inhibition test according to OECD 201 fulfilling all the validity criteria demanded by OECD 201 as well as the requirements on the reporting on experimental procedures and results, an EC50 (growth reduction) after 72 hours of 4.3 mg/L 3,3´-dichlorobenzidine with a 95% confidence interval of 3.2 - 5.6 mg/L in comparison to the solvent control group had been determined. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) as defined in the OECD-test guidelines (no significant growth inhibition and no cell deformation) was found after 72 hours to be 0.32 mg/L 3,3´-dichlorobenzidine.
