Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

87 % degradation of n-pentane and 71.43% degradation of 12-methylbutane occurred within 28 days and so both substances are considered readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

These studies (Exxon, 1996 and ExxonMobil Chemical, 1997) followed the OECD guideline 301F manometric respirometry test with some minor deviations in test concentrations. Minor deviations in the protocol were not considered to influence the integrity of the studies. The studies study indicates that the pentanes are readily biodegradable. The exception to this is cyclopentane where a study indicated that this substance is not readily biodegraded.
