Substance characterisation
Cinnamon leaf oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which > 90% of the constituents is identified. In the typical Cinnamon Leaf Oil, the main constituent Eugenol is present at 75% (range 70-85%).
The composition with eugenol and some minor constituents, some structurally related to eugenol, represents a relatively homogenous type of NCS and the environmental risk assessment may be based on the properties of the main constituent eugenol. The minor constituents have different properties for water solubility, volatility, adsorption and lipophility that determine their environmental behaviour. Due to these differences the assessment of the environmental properties of Cinnamon leaf oil is preferably based on data for the constituents.
In a Closed Bottle test (OECD TG 301D) Cinnamon leaf oil was biodegraded by 96% at day 28. In addition, based on the constituent approach as described in the industry protocol for the REACH registration of NCSs of botanical origin used as fragrance ingredients (see footnote 1), Cinnamon leaf oil is to be considered as a readily biodegradable substance.
The log Kow range for Cinnamon leaf oil constituents was found to be 1.82 - 6.3. In the typical Cinnamon lead oil, for 21.6% of the constituents log Kow is >3, for 6.3% of the constituents log Kow is >4 and for 5% of the constituents log Kow is > 4.5. A minor fraction of the constituents will have a tendency to sorb to organic matter.
The water solubility ranges from 980 mg/l for the main constituent eugenol to 0.5 mg/l for a minor constituent.
The initial vapour pressure of cinnamon leaf oil was estimated at 10.51 Pa at 25º Celsius. The vapour pressure of constituents ranges from 0.0741 to 536. This indicates that partitioning by volatilisation may play a role for only a small fraction of the constituents.
