- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2009-11-28 to 2010-03-15
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:
- performed in accordance with UK GLP standards (Schedule 1, Good Laboratory Practice Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/3106 as ammended by SI 2004/0994)).
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Test procedure:
- ignition time on contact with air
- Remarks on result:
- no ignition on contact with air (not further specified)
- Interpretation of results:
- other: Not classified in accordance with EU criteria
- Conclusions:
- The test material was found not to be highly flammable. The test material failed to ignite after five minutes of exposure to an air rich flame during the preliminary screening test.
- Executive summary:
The test material was found not to be highly flammable. The test material failed to ignite after five minutes of exposure to an air rich flame during the preliminary screening test.
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water

Preliminary screening test results
The pile failed to ignite during the preliminary test, it was deemed unnecessary to perform the main test and also the UN test N.1 readily combustible solids.

Description of key information
One GLP study is available which was performed in line with EU Method A.10. Tin metal was found to be non-flammable under the conditions of the flammability (solids) test. Tests to investigate the flammability in contact with water and pyrophoric properties of the substance were not conducted since, based on the chemical structure of the substance, and experience is its use, neither flammability in contact with water nor pyrophoric properties are expected.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
Tin metal was found to be non-flammable in the flammability (solids) test.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with Regulation EC No. 1272/2008 and Direction 67/548/EEC, no classification is required since tin metal was determined to be non-flammable.
