Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

No classification based on available data from dermal carcinogenicity studies supported by absence of a genotoxic activity.

Additional information

There are no studies available with long-term exposure to acetone via oral uptake or inhalation.

Acetone has been used as vehicle or solvent in a multitude of dermal carcinogenicity studies with up to life-time application to several strains of mice. As the acetone treated groups represented the vehicle control group, no additional negative control groups were investigated except in a single study. In summary, there are no indications of an elevated tumor incidence in acetone-treated vehicle control groups demonstrating a lack of a carcinogenic potential of acetone itself.
