Description of key information

The pyrophoric properties of cobalt metal powder is highly dependent on the physical form, the production process (i.e. non-passivated products versus passivated products) and the particle size/surface area of the respective sample. No clear cut-off value for the particle size/pyrophoric properties can be given.

Cobalt does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.

The flammability of cobalt metal powder is highly dependent on the physical form, the production process and the particle size/surface area of the respective sample. No clear cut-off value for the particle size/flammability properties can be given. It became apparent in numerous guideline-compliant flammability tests that cobalt metal powder with a MMD/D50 above 200 µm is non-flammable.

Additional information

pyrophoric properties

The pyrophoric properties of cobalt metal powder is highly dependent on the physical form, the production process (i.e. non-passivated products versus passivated products) and the particle size/surface area of the respective sample. No clear cut-off value for the particle size/pyrophoric properties can be given.

During long-term industrial experience in handling passivated cobalt metal powders (the most common substance placed on the market) shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously in contact with air.

The pyrophoric properties of non-passivated cobalt metal powder need to be assessed on an individual, company-specific basis due to the above given reasons. The pyrophoric properties of any specific non-passivated cobalt metal powder sample/batch grade (tested according to the United Nations Recommendation on the transport of dangerous goods, Manual of tests and Criteria, Division 4.2, Test method N.2) will be included in the accompanying material safety data sheet and thus any required risk management measures are communicated to the downstream users.

flammability solids

The flammability of cobalt metal powder is highly dependent on the physical form, the production process and the particle size/surface area of the respective sample. No clear cut-off value for the particle size/flammability properties can be given. It became apparent in numerous guideline-compliant flammability tests that cobalt metal powder with a MMD/D50 above 200 µm is non-flammable.

The flammable properties of cobalt metal powder with a particle size below the given value need to be assessed on an individual, company-specific basis due to the above given reasons.

The flammable properties of any specific cobalt metal powder sample/batch will be included in the accompanying material safety data sheet and thus any required risk management measures are communicated to the downstream users.
