Description of key information

The IC100 of quinine for Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Serratia marcesens is 1.62 g/L. The determined IC50 of quinine for Plasmodium falciparum is 0.015 mg/L at a high O2 tension and 0.032 mg/L at a low O2 tension.

Additional information

In the study published by Wink, 1998 the bacterial growth inhibiton of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Serratia marcesens was determined. The IC100 of quinine of all three Bacteria species is 5 mmol/L (1.62 g/L). Quinine has antibacterial activity. In the experimental study published by Divo, 1985 the IC50 for Plasmodium falciparum was determined with a high and a low O2 tension for 96 h. The IC50 for Plasmodium falciparum at a high O2 tension is 0.015 mg/l and the IC50 at a low O2 tension is 0.032 mg/l. Quinine is effective in vitro against the malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum.
