Description of key information
Sulfadimidine is non oxidising.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Oxidising properties:
- non oxidising
Additional information
The substance failed to satisfy the screening criteria reported in the CLP Regulation (EC) n. 1272/2008, 2.14.4.1 section because it contains oxygen chemically bonded not only to carbon or hydrogen (i.e. sulphur-oxygen).
However, the oxygen balance for this molecule is negative (-167).
The oxygen balance was calculated using the formula: -1600* [2X+(Y/2)+M-Z]/ Molecular weight
where:
X = number of atoms of carbon
Y = number of atoms of hydrogen
Z = number of atoms of oxygen
M = number of atoms of metal (metallic oxide produced).
Oxygen balance is an expression that is used to indicate the degree to which an explosive can be oxidized. If an explosive molecule contains just enough oxygen to convert all of its carbon to carbon dioxide, all of its hydrogen to water, and all of its metal to metal oxide with no excess, the molecule is said to have a zero oxygen balance. The molecule is said to have a positive oxygen balance if it contains more oxygen than is needed and a negative oxygen balance if it contains less oxygen than is needed.
Moreover, evidences connected to the long experience in handling and use of the molecule confirm that no oxidizing properties have never been observed and reported up to now in the usual conditions of production, stock, transport and use.
In conclusion, Sulfadimidine contains bonds sulphur-oxygen but it is not oxidising based on the oxygen balance values and the known experience in the handling and use of substances.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Sulfadimidine contains bonds sulphur-oxygen but it is not oxidising based on the oxygen balance values and the known experience in the handling and use of substances.
Therefore, the substance is not classified as oxidising, according to the CLP Regulation (EC n.1272/2008).
