Category name:
Perfluorocarbons

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
The category covers chemicals with moleculars composed only of carbon and fluorine atoms, and in which all the carbon-carbon bonds are fully saturated. It includes linear, branched, cyclic and polycyclic examples. it may include mixtures of stereoisomers.

It includes only chemicals in which at least 99.9% of the material is made up of saturated perfluorocarbons as previously described, but not necessarily a single component.
Category rationale:
Perfluorocarbons have long been considered a distinct group of chemicals having their own unique set of properties. They contain exclusively carbon-carbon and carbon-fluorine bonds, and all of their chemical properties result from those bonds. Physical properties are either consistent across the whole class or form a consistent trend across the whole class that is a function of the molecular weight.
