5 in vitro studies are available, of which two were disregarded due to significant methodological deficiencies. The remaining three studies are Ames studies. In all 3 Ames studies, 2-Methylfuran was tested negative with and without metabolic activation.

There is also one in vivo study available, which however was scored to be a K4 study. In this study, 2 -methylfuran did not cause any genotoxic hazards to the mammalian test system.

Taking all available in vitro data together in a weight of evidence approach, results in an overall negative outcome for genotoxicity. This is further supported by the in vivo study. In conclusion, the substance should not to be considered as genotoxic/mutagenic according to Regulation EC No 1272/2008, section 3.5.
