First-aid measures

General information

Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Description of first aid measures

Inhalation

Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. Oxygen or artificial respiration if needed. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim inhaled the substance.

Induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Call a physician or poison control centre immediately.

Skin contact

Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash skin with soap and water. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Call a physician or poison control centre

immediately.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Call a physician or poison control centre immediately.

Ingestion Not applicable.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Burning pain and severe corrosive skin damage. Potential for severe thermal burns from the spontaneous ignition of this gas. Causes serious eye damage. Symptoms may include stinging,

tearing, redness, swelling, and blurred vision. Permanent eye damage including blindness could result.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

Larger fires: Medium expension (>30:1) alcohol compatibele foam.

Small fires: Medium expension (>30:1) alcohol compatibele foam. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry sand.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Dry chemical. Water.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Water reactive material. When catch fire, it may burn vigorously. By heating and fire, harmful vapours/gases may be formed. Hydrogen chloride. (corrosive) Hydrogen gas. (Flammable)

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for firefighters:

Firefighters must use standard protective equipment including flame retardant coat, helmet, gloves, rubber boots, and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Special fire fighting procedures

In case of fire and/or explosion do not breathe fumes. Move containers from fire area if you can do so without risk. Do not get water inside container.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

For non-emergency personnel

Immediately evacuate personnel to safe areas. Local authorities should be advised if significant spillages cannot be contained. Fully encapsulating, vapour protective clothing should be worn for

spills and leaks with no fire. Keep upwind. Ventilate closed spaces before entering them. Many gases are heavier than air and will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

For emergency responders Use personal protection recommended below.

Environmental precautions

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Avoid release to the environment. Eliminate sources of ignition. Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk. If possible, turn leaking containers so that gas escapes rather than liquid. Cover with DRY earth, DRY sand or other non-combustible material followed with plastic sheet to minimise spreading or contact with rain. Do not get water on spilled substance or inside containers.

Never return spills in original containers for re-use.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Handle under inert gas. All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Provide adequate ventilation. Do not handle, store or open near an open flame, sources of heat or sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. Do not smoke. Do not allow water to get into container because of violent reaction and possible flash fire. Use care in handling/storage. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Avoid release to the environment. Do not empty into drains. Do not breathe gas. Do not breathe mist or vapour. Do not get this material in contact with skin. Do not get this material in contact with eyes. Do not get this material on clothing. Please handle this product carefully. This product may evolve hydrogen gas if contacted with waters, alcohols, moisture, acids, bases, strong oxidizing agents, catalystic metals or metallic compounds.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Never allow product to get in contact with water during storage. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Protect from sunlight. Store in cool place. Store in a well-ventilated place. Store in a

dry place. Keep container tightly closed. Keep out of the reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Keep in original container. Store away from incompatible materials (see Stability and reactivity).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Appropriate engineering controls: Explosion-proof general and local exhaust ventilation. Provide eyewash station.

Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment

Personal protection equipment should be chosen according to the CEN standards and in discussion with the supplier of the personal protective equipment.

General information

Eye/face protection Wear goggles/face shield. Tightly sealed safety glasses according to EN 166.

Skin protection

- Hand protection Wear protective gloves. Use protective gloves made of: Viton rubber (fluor rubber).

- Other Wear appropriate chemical resistant clothing. Wear full protective clothing.

Respiratory protection: Chemical respirator with acid gas cartridge. Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Respiratory protection must be worn whenever the WEL levels have been exceeded.

Thermal hazards Wear appropriate thermal protective clothing, when necessary.

Hygiene measures: Do not get this material in contact with skin. Do not get in eyes. Do not get this material on clothing. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash hands before breaks and immediately

after handling the product. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices.

Environmental exposure controls: Environmental manager must be informed of all major releases.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

Reacts with water, alcohols, acids, bases, strong oxidizing agents, catalystic metals and metallic compounds to evolve hydrogen gas.

Reacts violently with water, acids or bases, producing heat and reacts with moisture or humid air to evolve hydrogen chloride.

Chemical stability

Stable at normal conditions.

Possibility of hazardous reations: Reacts violently with water.

Conditions to avoid

Exposure to water or moisture.

Incompatible materials:

Water, alcohols, acids, bases, strong oxidizing agents, catalystic metals, metallic compounds.

Hazardous decomposition products

When contacting with water, alcohols, acids, bases, strong oxidizing agents, catalystic metals or metallic compounds, this product may evolve hydrogen gas and form flammable mixture in air. This product reacts violently with water, acids or bases, producing heat and reacts with moisture or humid air to evolve following compounds:

Hydrogen chloride.

Silicon dioxide.

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Dispose of in accordance with local regulations. Empty containers or liners may retain some product residues. This material and its container must be disposed of in a safe manner

Residual waste

Since emptied containers may retain product residue, follow label warnings even after container is emptied.

Contaminated packaging

EU waste code The Waste code should be assigned in discussion between the user, the producer and the waste disposal company.

Disposal methods/information

Incinerate(Beware of the high flammability in incineration.); or, Hydrolyze, neutralize and flush to the sewer connected to the wastewater treatment system. Incinerator should be appropriately

equipped for large amount of hydrochloric gas and fine silica powder which the product will generate in incineration. Workers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment. This

product will evolve small amount of hydrogen gas continuously, so buildings should be provided with an exhaust ventilation system to avoid accumulation of hydrogen gas evolved. Waste of this

product should be segregated from other waste. Hydrogen gas in a waste container should be purged with air, then discarded. Contract with a disposal operator licensed by the Law on Disposal

and Cleaning. Do not allow this material to drain into sewers/water supplies. Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local/regional/national/international regulations.
