Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
dissociation constant
Type of information:
other: Expert Assessment based on a literature review of the dissociation constants of 2-naphthol and read-across substances
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
March 2021
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Qualifier:
no guideline required
Principles of method if other than guideline:
An assessment was conducted using the available literature
Dissociating properties:
yes
No.:
#1
pKa:
9.63
Temp.:
25 °C

The pKa of 2-naphthol is 9.63 at 25 oC according to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (8th edition).  The literature value for 2-naphthol is in good agreement with the read-across substance 1-naphthol which has a dissociation constant of 9.34 at 25 oC.  The slight increase of 0.3 could be due to the positioning of the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring.

Conclusions:
The pKa of 2-naphthol is 9.63 at 25 oC.
Executive summary:

An expert assessment has been conducted for the dissociation constant of 2-naphthol based upon a literature review.

From the literature, the pKa of 2-naphthol is 9.63 at 25 oC according to the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (8th edition).  The literature value for 2-naphthol is in good agreement with the read-across substance 1-naphthol which has a dissociation constant of 9.34 at 25 oC.
