Since 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), fullrange, C15–C50 branched and linear' contains many constituents, two aspects need to be considered in relation to physicochemical properties. In the context of raw material handling and safe use it is important to understand the properties of the product as a whole. For the purposes of assessing environmental fate and behaviour it is essential to consider the properties of individual constituents because whole property data have no real scientific meaning or significance. However, with a huge number of constituents this is impractical to follow through. The hydrocarbon block method enables the assessment to be completed at an intermediate level of detail, such that constituents sharing similar physicochemical and fate and behaviour properties are assessed as a group or “Block”.
'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), fullrange, C15–C50 branched and linear' is a clear, colourless liquid at standard temperature and pressure, with a measured melting point of <-20 °C (EU Method A.1) and measured boiling range of 318-486°C (ASTM D-2887-06). The measured relative density is 0.816 at 20 °C (EU Method A.3) and viscosity 12.1 mm2/s at 40°C and 3.1 mm2/s at 100°C (ASTM D445). The substance has a flashpoint of 212 ± 2 °C (EU Method A.9, closed cup) and a measured autoignition temperature of 350 ± 5°C (EU Method A.15).Measured whole-substance vapour pressure (1.1 x 10-6 Pa at 25 ºC, determined using EU Method A.4), water solubility (3.1 mg TOC/L at 20.0±0.5°C, determined using EU Method A.6) and partition coefficient (log Kow >6.5 at 40 °C and pH7, determined using EU Method A.8) are also available. These values are not useful for chemical safety assessment purposes.
For the purposes of identifying hydrocarbon blocks and assessing the environmental hazard and fate properties of those blocks, it is necessary to consider certain physicochemical properties of the individual constituents of 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), full-range, C15-C50 branched and linear', namely vapour pressure, water solubility, n-octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) and Henry’s Law constant (HLC). Predicted property data were obtained for the constituents as described in the relevant Endpoint Study Records. The basis for allocation of the hydrocarbon blocks is described in Annex 1 to Section 9 of the Chemical Safety Report.
