First-aid measures

General advice: Consult a physician. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

If swallowed: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth with water. Consult a physician.

If inhaled: If breathed in, move person into fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Consult a physician.

In case of skin contact: Wash off with soap and plenty of water. Consult a physician.

In case of eye contact: Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and consult a physician.

Most important symptoms and effects:Cough, Shortness of breath, Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Absorption into the body leads to the formation of methemoglobin which in sufficient concentration causes cyanosis. Onset may be delayed 2 to 4 hours or longer. Blurred vision, Palpitation.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media: Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Strong water jet.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

During fire, irritating and highly toxic gases (NOx, CO, CO2) may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Many Alkyl nitrites are thermally unstable and have the potential to readily decompose or explode when heated.

Advice for fire fighters: Flammable liquid, insoluble in water. Wear full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Keep unprotected people away, allow only well trained experts wearing suitable protective clothing to abide in the field of accident. Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Stop leak if it can be done without any risk. Do not get water inside the container. Do not touch spilled material. Use respiratory protection in case of aerosols/fumes. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Environmental precautions:

Dispose of spillage and waste (product/packaging) in accordance with all applicable environmental laws. Do not allow to enter sewers/soil/surface or ground water. Notify the respective authorities in accordance with local law in the case of environmental pollution immediately.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Small spill: absorb with an inert material and put the spilled material in an appropriate waste disposal. Large spill: toxic flammable liquid, insoluble or very slightly soluble in water. Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Stop leak if without risk. Absorb with DRY earth, sand or other non-combustible material. Do not get water inside container. Do not touch spilled material. Prevent entry into sewers, basements or confined areas; dike if needed. Call for assistance on disposal.

Handling and storage

This substance should be handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates. Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems should be available at each manufacturing site.

Observe conventional hygiene precautions. Do not ingest. Do not breathe the gas/fumes/vapor/spray. Wear suitable protective clothing. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. If ingested, seek medical advice immediately and show the container or the label. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Technical measures: ensure adequate ventilation. Keep locked up.

Precautions against fire and explosion: keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Ground all equipment containing the material.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Keep in original, closed and labelled container. The place of storage has to be properly ventilated and clean. Store in cool and dry place. Store in segregated and approved area. Keep container tightly closed and sealed until ready for use. Avoid all possible sources of ignition (spark or flame). Follow all instructions on the label.

Incompatible materials: oxidizing agents, reducing agents, organic metals, metals, acids.

Recommended storage temperature: 2 - 8 °C

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure controls

In case of a hazardous material with no controlled concentration limit it is the employer’s duty to keep concentration levels down to a minimum achievable by existing scientific and technological means, where the hazardous substance poses no harm to workers.

Appropriate engineering controls

In pursuance of work is proper foresight needed to avoid spilling onto clothes and floors and to avoid contact with eyes and skin.

Personal protective equipment

Eye/face protection: Safety glasses with side-shields conforming to EN166 Use equipment for eye protection tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).

Skin protection: Handle with gloves. Gloves must be inspected prior to use. Use proper glove removal technique (without touching glove's outer surface) to avoid skin contact with this product. Dispose of contaminated gloves after use in accordance with applicable laws and good laboratory practices. Wash and dry hands. The selected protective gloves have to satisfy the specifications of EU Directive 89/686/EEC and the standard EN

374 derived from it.

Body Protection: Complete suit protecting against chemicals, flame retardant antistatic protective clothing, the type of protective equipment must be selected according to the concentration and amount of the dangerous substance at the specific workplace.

Respiratory protection: Where risk assessment shows air-purifying respirators are appropriate use a full-face respirator with multi-purpose combination (US) or type AXBEK (EN 14387) respirator cartridges as a backup to engineering controls. If the respirator is the sole means of protection, use a full-face

supplied air respirator. Use respirators and components tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or CEN (EU).

Environmental exposure controls: Do not let product enter drains.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

Highly reactive with organic materials. Reactive with oxidizing agents, reducing agents, finely powdered metals, acids.

Chemical stability

The product is stable under normal temperature and pressure. Polymerization will not occur.

Product

Burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber but exert extra care in igniting as this material is highly flammable. Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company.
