Additional information

Data are available for the short-term aquatic toxicity of hydrocarbons, C8-C11, n-alkanes, isoalkanes < 2% aromatics to invertebrates and to algae. The results of these studies are similar to the results seen in short-term algal and invertebrate studies on the surrogate substance, hydrocarbons, C9-C11, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <2% aromatics, supporting the read-across of data for other ecotoxicological endpoints.

Conclusion on classification

Based on measured data, Hydrocarbons, C8-C11, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, <2% aromatics, is not classified for the environment because it does not demonstrate acute invertebrate toxicity, and alga toxicity at loadings up to 100 mg/L. Based on read-across data, it does not demonstrate acute toxicity to fish at loadings up to 1000 mg/L. In addition, it is also readily biodegradable. Alga 72-hour NOELR values are >1 mg/L and there is evidence of rapid degradation in the environment based on a high extent of biodegradation demonstrated in soil.
