Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Jan - Feb 1997
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test
GLP compliance:
yes
Analytical monitoring:
yes
Details on sampling:
The respiration rate of an activated sludge fed with a standard amount of synthetic sewage feed was measured after a contact time of 3 hours. The respiration rate of the same activated sludge in the presence of various concentrations of the test substance under otherwise identical conditions was also measured. The inhibitory effect of the test substance at a particular concentration was expressed as a percentage of the mean respiration rates of two controls. If possible, an IC 50 value was calculated from the inhibition values at the different concentrations.
Vehicle:
yes
Details on test solutions:
Stock solution 500 mg/I reference substance in deionized water.
Test concentrations 329, 103, 33 and 12 mg/I of the test substance. Because the test substance was not completely soluble in the test medium it was given directly into the test system without preparation of a stock solution.
32, 10 and 3.2 mg/I of the reference substance.
Test organisms (species):
activated sludge
Test type:
not specified
Water media type:
freshwater
Total exposure duration:
3 h
Test temperature:
18 - 22°C
pH:
8.0 - 8.3
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
3,5-Dichlorophenol
Key result
Duration:
3 h
Dose descriptor:
IC50
Effect conc.:
> 329 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Details on results:
Due to its physicochemical properties the test substance was not completely soluble in the test medium. The reported results are related to the nominal concentration given into the test system.
Results with reference substance (positive control):
The IC50 (3 h) of the reference substance 3,5-Dichlorophenol was 11 mg/I
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The IC50 (3 h) of the test substance PBS 859 DS was > 329 mg/I
The IC20 (3 h) of the test substance PBS 859 DS was 95 mg/I
