- Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
Due to its inherent properties (water insolubility, absence of lipophilic characteristics), slags, tin-smelting does not cross biological membranes and does not have skin penetrating properties. Therefore, the substance does not have any potential of being a skin sensitiser.
Based on the results of the water solubility test (see IUCLID endpoint 4.8 of the technical dossier) negligibly small amounts of metal ions are leached out during a 7-day period and under acidic conditions. Even in case that workers have skin contact with slags, tin-smelting and leaching-out of metal ions occurs (e.g. via contact with perspiratory liquids) a subsequent skin sensitising effect can per se be excluded since all of the corresponding metals/metal oxides have been assessed as not being skin sensitisers during the respective registration processes and as indicated in the submitted C&L Notifications.
